Off the Beaten Path - Ivan Dolnikov - Abkhazia Wanderings
I
n general, Abkhazia is a mountainous country with mountains covering more
than 75% of its territory. Abkhazian mountains are famous for their solutional
caves - caves that are formed out of soluble rock, such as limestones – of which
the most renowned is the Krubera (Voronja) Cave, the world’s deepest known cave
which extends 2080 meters into the ground. In contrast, the country’s highest peak
is Dombai-Ulgen which rises 4048 meters above sea level. Some passes lead over
the mountain range; however, due to tense relations with Georgia, these routes do
not function.
