Well , thank goodness that ’ s over
Where did the year go ? The past 12 months seem to have vanished in the blink of an eye – and yet at the same time , so much has happened it ’ s hard to imagine how the universe found time to cram it all in . We kicked off on the coattails of Covid , moved swiftly on to the invasion of Ukraine , made a quick detour via an international energy crisis , worried quite a lot about inflation and spent the summer watching rates climb as governments scrambled to curtail overheating economies . Q3 brought the palpitating excitement of a new gilts crisis , along with ( for the UK ) a seemingly never-ending merry-go-round of new prime ministers . As the cherry on top , FTX cheerily crashed the crypto market in November , and we round the whole thing off with dire warnings of recession from most of Wall Street . Fun times ahead . With global growth expected to slow to near 3 % next year , while rates continue to rise , it certainly looks as if 2023 will bring its own challenges . But in the meantime , we can celebrate the year we ’ ve had : the notable successes , the challenges surmounted , and the battles won . The trading community has been one of those most exposed to the turbulence of 2022 , standing at the coalface of market volatility . And The TRADE has accompanied you : through high profile career moves , major new partnerships , regulatory uncertainty , market upheaval , and so much more . In November , we came together to celebrate the industry with our biggest ever Leaders in Trading Awards and as always , it was a night to remember . In this , our last issue of 2022 , we are delighted to feature Gráinne O ’ Connor , our Trader of the Year , who talks about the importance of diversity and inclusion . We speak with Mike Poole , the newly anointed head of trading at Jupiter , about his aspirations for the future ( and his ambivalence around automation ), and with Stuart Lawrence of UBS Asset Management about his algo strategy . We ’ ve also got a deep dive into crypto , an evaluation of the UK ’ s disastrous mini-budget , our annual crystal ball prediction series , and much much more . It ’ s been a long year and yet somehow , such a short one . It ’ s also the end of my first year as managing editor and , as I reflect on the past 12 months , all I can hope is that there are many more to come .
