The changing face of The TRADE

The New Year is a time for reflection . Looking back over the last 12 months , I think it is safe to say no two days have been the same at The TRADE . We ’ ve said goodbye to old faces and welcomed new ones , run our first digital festival , and continued to adapt to the ever-changing hybrid working environment .

Our Leaders in Trading event returned to The Savoy at the start of November . It was a roaring success and we took great pride in being able to knit the industry together again , reconnecting so many smiling faces after such a long time apart . We ’ ve welcomed our editorial assistant , Wesley Bray , as a permanent fixture to the team , while we ’ re also excited to welcome our new editor Lauren ( Laurie ) McAughtry who is starting in the New Year and who will no doubt take The TRADE in a new direction with a renewed sense of vigour .
Outside of our little microclimate , the capital markets have continued to change around us . Regulatory changes , including the postponement of the mandatory buy-in regime , updates to MiFID II , and the upcoming cessation date of Libor , will continue to shape the market structure landscape . The ramp-up in institutional interest in digital assets has seen a wave of infrastructure developments including the SIX Swiss Exchange gaining regulatory approval for a digital asset exchange in a market first and Fidelity Digital Assets receiving a custody license from the UK ’ s Financial Conduct Authority . We ’ ve seen major institutions taking their first steps with blockchain and a growing list of participants begin their migration to the cloud .
This winter issue unpacks these market trends and more , including features exploring post-Brexit divergence on dark trading and market transparency , unpacking ESG buzzwords and examining the growing influence of retail traders . Our cover interview with Union Investment ’ s head of multi-asset trading , Christoph Hock , deep dives into the new hybrid organisational structure that the asset manager is pioneering and touches on everything from digital assets trading for institutional investors to the shifting regulatory landscape and the multi-asset trading desk .
Our annual gaze into the crystal ball offers predictions from across the industry on what ’ s to come in 2022 . If the previous quarter alone is anything to go by then it ’ s bound to be an exciting one . We ’ re certainly looking forward to what ’ s in store in another big year for The TRADE .
