BlackRock ’ s own Paul Battams , who heads up EMEA equity trading , takes centre stage as our cover star in this issue following his ‘ Trader of the Year ’ award win for the long-only category at The TRADE ’ s recent Leaders in Trading : The Digital Experience ( LiTDX ) event . On page 20 , Battams tells me about being a leader at the world ’ s largest asset manager with an emphasis on the wellbeing of his team and destigmatising mental health across the industry .
Elsewhere on page 12 , global head of trading and order management at UBS Asset Management , Lynn Challenger , outlines how the equities market is becoming more internalised as traders seek solutions to rising costs and information leakage . Trading duo at Spanish Asset Manager Bestinver , Alex Roselló and Gustavo Iglesias , also examine the challenges Brexit has presented for buy-side firms in Europe on page 50 .
The editorial team investigates some of the biggest developments to impact the industry so far this year , including the infamous collapse of family office Archegos Capital Management ( page 16 ), TP ICAP ’ s recent acquisition of institutional trading network Liquidnet ( page 34 ), and the history of Chicago ’ s legendary open outcry trading pits following the recent permanent closure of CME Group ’ s floors ( page 56 ).
Some interesting trends are brought to fore in the hedge fund results of The TRADE ’ s 2021 Algorithmic Trading Survey on page 63 as the buy-side is seemingly relying more on algos to trade most of their portfolios , particularly during times of market stress . The TRADE hopes to recognise survey outperformers at our flagship Leaders in Trading awards ceremony at the Savoy Hotel on 4 November .
As we prepare to fully emerge from lockdown in the UK it is clear from our cover shoot this issue summer has well and truly arrived in London . It ’ s hard to believe we are already halfway through 2021 , but with the promise of live events and face-to-face meetings in the second half of the year means there is a lot to look forward to . Of course , navigating this new normal will come with challenges , but I can ’ t help thinking … onwards and upwards !
