Never a dull moment

The start of this year goes to show there ’ s never a dull moment when covering institutional trading . From the intensely dramatic GameStop saga to the surprisingly flat end to the Brexit transition period and Bitcoin ’ s apparent comeback , it has been an eventful first three months of 2021 to say the least .

It ’ s been a pretty hectic first quarter for The TRADE too . By now , I hope that many of you will have seen some of the special digital content we produced for Leaders in Trading : The Digital Experience - or LiTDX , as we coined it - to celebrate our 2020 awards ceremony .
I ’ m thrilled that our cover star this issue is Boussard & Gavaudan ’ s Lucienne Lao . She was crowned Trader of the Year ( hedge fund ) in The TRADE ’ s coveted 2020 Buy-side Awards and tells me about rising through the buy-side trading ranks on page 38 .
Remind yourselves of the winners across all LiTDX categories on page 14 and take a look behind the scenes on page 16 , before learning more about our 2020 Rising Stars of Trading and Execution on page 18 . It was fantastic to have so many people from all over the industry participate in LiTDX - Congratulations to all of our winners !
Elsewhere in this issue , we explore some of the big events from the first quarter - don ’ t miss our in-depth look at the GameStop saga on page 50 , with some interesting insights on the event ’ s significant impact on the institutional space . We also gain an inside look at JP Morgan ’ s futures trading business on page 58 and learn that the buy-side is increasingly adopting the bank ' s machine learning-equipped algorithms .
In a hugely positive development in 2021 , The TRADE magazine has officially gone green ! Going forward , each issue will be manufactured using 100 % offshore wind electricity sourced from UK wind , and 100 % of the inks used for printing are vegetable oil based . Furthermore , we are supporting a clean drinking water initiative in India as a carbon offset project , in partnership with our new printing partners Park Communications . We are proud to have made this change and would like to thank Park Communications for making these initiatives possible .
As I enter my second year as editor of The TRADE and the UK emerges from lockdown , there ’ s a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air . Following the success of LiTDX , we ’ re lining up more digital projects and events for the rest of 2021 . If the first quarter is anything to go by , it ’ s going to be another eventful year …
