A new chapter for The TRADE
T
he TRADE is delighted to announce that Hayley McDowell has been
appointed editor, as we begin an exciting new chapter in the publica-
tion’s story.
When I imagined sitting down to pen my first editor’s letter, I certainly
didn’t expect to be doing so amid a global pandemic. I also hadn’t envisioned
compiling it from the comfort of my own home, with a talented new editorial
team scattered across London trying to master Zoom, Skype and GoToMeeting
in place of networking at the likes of the postponed FIX Trading Conference,
TradeTech Europe, and our own proprietary events.
No, much like the billions of people around the world, this wasn’t how I
imagined the start of 2020. But that doesn’t mean the latest chapter of our own
story is not an eventful and exciting one!
Like all of you, we’re trying to rise to the challenge here at The TRADE,
working remotely, yet tirelessly, to produce the most in-depth and relevant
content for this magazine. Fortunately, we have worked hard to produce
features throughout the first quarter, and our cover interview with the equity
trading desk at T. Rowe Price was carried out just prior to the shut downs
which would soon sweep Europe, and indeed London.
In keeping with the global unity theme seen throughout the COVID-19 pan-
demic, we have writers from throughout Europe and Asia contributing to this
edition, along with coverage from the US and interviews with industry experts
throughout the world.
As we continue to expand here at The TRADE, I’m also thrilled to welcome
Kiays Khalil to the editorial team as our new multimedia reporter. He will
be focusing on some exciting new digital projects at The TRADE, including
a range of video content and the recent launch of our podcasts, which some
of you may have already listened to on our website. We’re also excited to be
announcing another new reporter here this summer.
For me, this new role, new team and the current global situation has given
me time to reflect. A lot has changed at The TRADE since I first began report-
ing on buy-side trading and trends in market structure. You realise that while
some change is bad (global pandemic), other transformation is inevitable - as
evident in the new technology and automation that continues to take hold of
the buy-side trading desk. The equity execution team at T. Rowe Price, and
winners of Trading Desk of the Year at the Leaders in Trading awards ceremo-
ny in November, discuss the impact of this in our cover interview on page 28.
While it may have been an unexpected start to 2020, and it isn’t quite busi-
ness as usual, I would like to take this
opportunity to say that I feel privileged
to lead The TRADE as it starts this new
chapter… Now that’s something I imag-
ined saying in my first editor’s letter.
