A year older, a year wiser
As 2018 limps over what we believe to be the finishing line of another
sojourn around the sun, how are you feeling about your accomplishments
this year and the state of the world in general?
Perhaps this has been a year of record-breaking, mountain-climbing, tar-
get-smashing, jewel-encrusted successes? Or maybe it’s been a bewildering,
chaotic, never-ending nightmare of migraine-like headaches?
It’s hard to judge how 2018 panned out because it seems that so much
happened over the course of the year. It’s hard enough just to keep what
happened last week fresh in your mind, let alone last month.
Now you might be thinking that my tone here is somewhat weary and
burnt-out, and you’d be right because that’s just my default setting, but
that’s not how I will be remembering 2018. Sure, it was a trying year at
times but on both a personal and professional level there was a lot to re-
member positively.
This Winter 2018 edition of The TRADE magazine is my fourth as the ed-
itor of this publication, something I take no small measure of pride in. I was
also able to present The TRADE’s Leaders in Trading awards for the first
time this year and popular consensus was that it was a great evening and
event for all involved. Check out page 16 for a full list of this year’s winners,
and mark those calendars for November next year!
But looking forward, there is much to be said about what’s coming in the
near future. Then TRADE canvassed the buy- and sell-sides, exchanges and
technology vendors to find out what the coming year holds for the capital
markets, the results of which can be found on page 76.
Unsurprisingly, Brexit crops up a number of times as the issue at the fore-
front of people’s thinking – and I will leave my own thoughts on the whole
mess out of this – but there are also predictions around the development of
new technologies, regulatory reform and trading strategies.
There’s also much on the horizon ahead for The TRADE at the start of
next year. We will be on our travels again early next year to cover WBR’s
TRADETech FX US conference in Miami, before heading back to London
for our own MIFID II: Check Up event on 26 February. This will be the
final entry in a series of full-day conferences we have run on the regulatory
regime and we look forward to announcing speakers and panellists online
soon.
And so, all that’s left to say is happy holidays from The TRADE and a Hap-
py New Year. May the coming year provide you with new opportunities and
accomplishments to look back on in another 12 months’ time.
