aylor Health Care System Foundation celebrated a new milestone with the completion of a $1.5
million fundraising campaign to establish a gastroenterology fellowship named in honor of Daniel DeMarco,
M.D., medical director of digestive disease technology, Baylor
Health Care System. The fellowship was made possible by significant gifts from donors including, Dr. DeMarco, his wife, Cara East,
M.D., medical director, Baylor Research Institute’s Clinical CV
Research Center, and many of their colleagues and patients.
Dr. DeMarco spoke at the celebration and expressed his gratitude
for the philanthropic support shown to make this dream a reality. In
particular, he acknowledged former patient Ann Vendig, who passed
away from pancreatic cancer earlier this year.
“Ann was such a special patient, and she was passionate about raising money for this endowment. Although we lost Ann this year,
gifts continued to trickle in from across her network of friends and

family. Even her amazing clothes collection was auctioned off to
benefit this fellowship,” said Dr. DeMarco.
As evidenced by his relationship with Ann,Dr. DeMarco shared
that gastroenterology physicians often have a special bond with
their patients because of the connection they make through their
comprehensive course of treatment, focusing on the mind, body
and soul.
Dr. DeMarco said, “I cannot express my appreciation enough
to each of you for contributing to the establishment of this endowed
fellowship. Just like Ann, you are an inspiration.”
Funds from the endowment will be used to support one of six
gastroenterology fellows each year for three years at Baylor.
