the torch Winter 2013, Issue 4 | Page 27

FROM THE CHAIRMAN Baylor and Change ... Standing the Test of Time The final edition of this year’s the torch welcomes the opportunity to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future. I have mixed emotions about saying farewell to 2013, a year filled with such wonderful achievements for Baylor Health Care System and Baylor Health Care System Foundation, and yet I look forward to 2014 with great anticipation and expectation. When I think of the accomplishments and aspirations of the Foundation and Baylor, there are many words that come to mind: innovative, intentional, thoughtful, and change. I think a quote I saw recently sums up nicely why change is a must: “By changing nothing, nothing changes.” – Tony Robbins Intentional change … building for the future. The groundbreaking of the new Baylor Waxahachie facility to be completed in 2014. The grand opening of the newly renovated Erik and Margaret Jonsson Hospital. The merger of two major health care systems in Texas that share a similar mission, vision and history of more than 100 years – Baylor Scott & White Health. Thoughtful change … giving for today and tomorrow. The support from thousands of faithful and generous Foundation donors. The launch of Campaign 2015: Baylor Makes Us All Better, with the goal of raising $250 million, to invest in patient-focused programs, research, medical education and capital improvements. Innovative change … leading to extraordinary advancements. The development of a breast cancer vaccine to target aggressive forms of the disease. The living donor liver transplant program that offers hope to those who might otherwise never receive the organ they so desperately need. These meaningful and purposeful initiatives are changing lives … one at a time, offering great hope. Patients are at the center of everything we do … they are the reason we want to keep change in our vocabulary and at the forefront of our minds. Never has there been a more exciting time in Baylor’s history, and I am deeply grateful for all the changes that have made this possible. I encourage you to consider Baylor in your year-end giving. Help support the change in this remarkable institution. Best wishes for a happy holiday season and a blessed Christmas.
