The event, presented by MedAssets for the third year, raised more than $175,000 to benefit the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute (DHWI) at the Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center. John McCaa, WFAA, Channel 8 anchor and award-winning journalist, served as the event emcee and celebrity guest Sherri Shepherd, host of The View and The New York Times best-selling author, shared her personal struggle with diabetes. Runners take off at the DHWI Healthy Harvest Fun Walk/5K and Diabetes Expo. Established in 2010, DHWI is located in the Frazier neighborhood of southern Dallas and is a unique joint effort between Baylor Health Care System and the City of Dallas. At the core of its mission, DHWI seeks to improve the health and wellness of residents through diabetes education and prevention programs. Among its many programs, the facility offers a clinic staffed by physicians, nurses, care coordinators and diabetes education specialists, as well as healthy cooking and exercise classes. Low-cost medications are also available for sale on site, and a farm stand selling fresh fruit and vegetables is held each Friday. Over 900 participants enjoyed the perfect race day weather.
