LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT By the time you read this, most of you will have made the transition home from the mountains, lakes or seashores that you and your family enjoyed during the summer break. Our family enjoyed the “low country” charm of the Carolina coast. I was grateful to have so many of my loved ones all in one place. Early one morning, I had a special one-on-one conversation with one of my daughters. While savoring our first cup of coffee, we enjoyed a brief moment of peace before the kids came downstairs for breakfast. We were talking about everything–and nothing. I don’t remember how it came up, but I told her that I was fond of country song lyrics that capture a moment. As one of her generation are wont to do, she immediately Googled the “best country song lyrics” and texted them to me. After returning from vacation, I unpacked both my luggage and my texts. Out of one of the top ten country lyric lists she sent me was a song made famous by Trace Adkins. 4 It’s called “Just Fishin’.” It’s about being in a moment and grasping its true importance. It’s about the bond between a father and a little girl. It’s about a father fishing with his daughter. The little daughter only worries about catching fish, but father says they are not only “just fishin’,” but also making memories: “I’m lost in her there holdin’ that pink rod and reel / She’s doin’ almost everything but sittin’ still / Talkin’ ’bout her ballet shoes and training wheels / And her kittens / And she thinks we’re just fishin’   I say, ‘Daddy loves you, baby’ one more time / She says, ‘I know … I think I’ve got a bite.’ / And all this laughin’, cryin’, smilin’, dyin’ here inside’s / What I call, livin’, And she thinks we’re just fishin’ on the riverside / Throwin’ back what we could fry / Drownin’ worms and killin’ time / Nothin’ too ambitious / She ain’t even thinkin’ ’bout / What’s really goin’ on right now / But I guarantee this memory’s a big’un / And she thinks we’re just fishin.’” The song is about understanding what life and what love is all about. My hope is that you captured some of both during your summer. Due to your generosity and support on June 30th, the Foundation completed another successful fiscal year. As we start our new fiscal year, we’re excited both about our new initiatives and bringing our comprehensive campaign to a successful conclusion. We look forward to working with both new and old friends to make this next year the best ever in support of our patients! Rowland K.
