SHAPING GEATLAND

In remembrance of Beowulf

When we look back to the last defining moment of Beowulf’s life, we come across a young, strong warrior who proves that he is much more courageous then the rest of the cowardly Geatish warriors. His name was Wiglaf, the one there for Beowulf when he was wounded, fighting against death and the dragon. Wiglaf overcame his fear of the dragon and scarified his life to shield Beowulf until he was strong enough to fight the dragon once and for all.

This moment in Wiglaf’s life had a profound impact on him and it left a lasting impression. His admiration for Beowulf made his view on the world completely different. He admired Beowulf’s strength, power, and courage. Wiglaf aspired to be just like Beowulf and live by his morals and actions.

Once the throne was his, living up to Beowulf’s glory is precisely what he did. He sought out to live and rule by what can be best described as his new religion. He planned on honoring Beowulf by being the living embodiment of the great king. He felt there was a duty bound to share it with all those he came across.

It was all “the rage” now that Wiglaf was the leader of Geatland. Everyone wanted to be a part of this new “religion.” Everyone knew of Beowulf and knew of his power and accomplishments.

So everyone was willing to adopt this way of living and to aspire live life and act similar to Beowulf.
