How much is Technology Effecting you?

My interviewee today is with Staci Segalla, who is originally from Milford, Massachusetts, but now attends Plymouth State University. She is a first year like me and she is my roommate. Staci and I met on the Facebook page made for incoming freshmen to become roommates. Ever since then we have worked very well together. We get along very well and we have been so close ever since. I chose to interview her today because all teenagers use their phones 24/7. I wanted the perspective of someone from our generation. We find that we have a constant need for cell phones; we are constantly using them. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Are they helping us or damaging our society? Technology is evolving every day. It helps us as college students in our everyday lives. Everyone has opinions on technology and I wanted to do this interview to see another point of view on technology.

How many hours do you use your phone a day?

“Oh my gosh, I use my phone I'd say a total of 4 or 5 straight hours. Especially when I'm laying in bed.”

How long can you go without looking at your phone?

“I can go a while. In class I don't use it at all. If I wanted to I could probably go all day. It is more of a habit than a need."

How do you feel about social media? Can you live without it and how does it affect your everyday life?

“So, how do I feel about it? I'm pretty neutral. I have social media accounts, but I could live without it, I guess. It's more of an everybody has social media,”so it's weird if you don't have it. People always ask, “what's your Instagram or Snapchat?” so I feel like it's more a way to keep in touch with people, especially family, that I don't get to see as often, but I think I could live without it.”

Do you text or call more? Why?

“I text more because it's easier and faster to text. Especially when you don't have time. I also feel like a call is more urgent and for emergencies.”

Do you think you miss certain important interactions throughout the day because of your phone?

“Uh maybe. I think people spend more time on their phones in awkward situations. It's kind of a habit to just pick up your phone when you feel uncomfortable rather than trying to start a conversation with someone you don't know. At parties especially. What's supposed to be a social event, you look around and people are using their phones to text and take pictures.”

Does your phone affect your sleep schedule?

“Yes and no. Yes because if I start to watch a show on my phone or check social media, I could sit there for hours looking and it's hard to stop once you have started, haha. But It helps me wake up in the morning.”

Has your phone negatively affected any of your relationship? With social media and such?

“Yes, but everybody says yes to that. I found out my ex boyfriend was cheating on me through Instagram…. Don't want to talk about that too much.”
