The following activity is intended to be realized with first year primary students. My goal for this activity is to get the students to acquire simple vocabulary about movements and actions The sample was made with the book Bounce 1, unit 6, Do it! For first grade primary. For this activity, I worked with the action verbs run, walk, touch and jump covered by the unit, and I introduced the modal verb can in first person singular.

The Total Physical Response (TPR)

Objective:

At the end of the activity, the students will be able to recognise and understand vocabulary related to actions and abilities.

Instructions:

Pre - activity: The teacher writes the four verbs

on the whiteboard, explaining the meanings of

each word, and checking if the students

understand them, asking them questions.

Activity: The teacher separates the class in three groups (each row is a group) she writes the name of each group in the board. Each turn is played by two students. Student A from couple number 1 picks a piece of paper with one of the verbs (for example, jump) He or she has to act out the verb (he or she jumps) and student B has to guess the verb. Each row gets 1 point everytime a couple guess the verb. If they do not, the teacher gives the group the opportunity of correcting their team partners. If they do, they get the point anyway.
