Study Smarter, Not harder
o matter what course you take, learning is a process, not a product. Students who take the time to incorporate a specific and strategic process of learning new material will not only retain more information but will have a better understanding of the newly aquired information.
The Study Cycle is crucial for knowing how to utilize your study time. Let's take a look at the 4 Phases of the Study Cycle!
PHASE I
-Read or PREVIEW the assigned readings or power points BEFORE CLASS!
This is a great opportunity to briefly outline or make note of the main points, headings, key words, main characters, settings, etc (if no power point is available). Leave room to fill in key points mentioned in the lecture about that particular topic.
PHASE II
-GO TO CLASS!
Listen actively, take notes, and participate.
PHASE III
- REVIEW or process class notes within 24 hours!
This is a great opportunity to merge book notes with class notes and it allows you to begin to connect the ideas that were covered in the lecture. Don't wait until the week before an exam to look over your class notes!
PHASE IV
- REFLECT on what you learned at the end of each week. Assess what you understood about the weeks' lessons.Go to your professor with your areas of deficiencies so they can help you before you move on to new material NOT two days before the exam!
