The Superhero Genre #1 | Page 10

Throughout film history superhero films have been a mainstay, especially in the 21st century with at least 3 superhero released a year since 2003. Although they are a big part of cinema, they haven’t always been the most successful genre of films with both of DC’s major characters Superman in 1978 Batman in 1989 being widely recognised as the films that brought superhero films in the mainstream (then went off the rails with Superman III, Superman IV, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin). Since the turn of the century Marvel have been the comic book films that have been constantly producing successful films, first with Blade 1&2, X-Men 1&2, Spider-Man 1&2 and all three being panned for their third films, however, in 2008 Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige changed it all with the release of Iron Man which saw the kickstart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which now in 2018 is considered the most successful series of all time. With 19 films under the belt of the film studios juggernaut it does look like there is no sign of stopping or any studio being able to replicate the success, mainly Warner Bros. and their DC Extended Universe which has been poorly received by both fans and critics alike since its inception in 2013 with the release of Man of Steel and the follow-ups of Batman v Superman & Suicide Squad in 2016 and Wonder Woman & Justice League in 2017 with all the hopes of the universe now falling upon the widely anticipated upcoming 2018 Aquaman film of the same name.
