THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF THE TRIPTYCH
The creative process is a complex game between the conscious and the unconscious, between personal instances and external circumstances, an exercise of awareness in which nothing comes for free, neither the author ' s choices nor the haphazardness of events.
Entering into the specifics of the triptych, I would like to describe the work by explaining, as far as possible, everything that has happened since its conception to its final completion, working and compositional choices, techniques and events.
First of all, I have to say that I did not personally choose the subject, but it was proposed to me and I accepted it. Normally I deal with subject matter connected with my personal sphere of interests and research that, as illustrated in the previous pages, encompasses aesthetic and spiritual content between the East and the West( see I KING, SHODOKA and RUPALOKA above). In this case, the request to depict the Struggle of Jacob presented itself almost as a challenge, a stimulating opportunity to probe the structure of the ego, disengaging me from my ideals and drawing me back to the roots of my Christian culture.
To address this topic, I felt it appropriate to first deepen my knowledge of it by:- meticulously consulting the biblical text,- researching and analyzing the many previous artistic interpretations of The Struggle of Jacob,- listening carefully to the recordings of a series of preparatory lectures held at the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage of the Church, of the Pontifical Gregorian University. The following list shows full the range of the lectures:
Nuno da Silva Goncalves, S. J. The Purpose of the Artistic Retreat " The Struggle of Jacob, Cologne 2016 ". Yvonne Dohna Schlobitten The Struggle of Jacob according to Guardini. Giorgia Salatiello Immediate Immediacy: from Experience to the Route of Faith. Emanuela Zurli Jacob Struggling with Himself and with God. Narrative analysis of Genesis 32: 33-33. Joseph Sievers The Struggle of Jacob in the Rabbinical Tradition. Martin Morales, S. J. Le Beau Danger: The Struggle of Writing. Jean Paul Hernandez, S. J. The Struggle of Jacob: Spiritual Exegesis. Andrea de Santis Discontinuance and Struggle, Forms of Encounter with God.
