Central Alabama is the gateway to the southeast and home to historic Birmingham, the largest city in the state and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. East Alabama, according to New Geography magazine, is the smartest metro in Alabama and the fourth in the U.S. That can be explained in large part by the presence of Auburn University. In the southernmost part of the state, there is Mobile, with its French influence and the sunny beaches of Panama City, Orange Beach, and Gulf Shores.
