Basketball Football Track
The Volcano Vista Hawk’ s, David Cormier, is a rarity in today’ s sports world. He is a multi-sport athlete who not only participated in three sports, but excelled in each. He even covered all the seasons. He played football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and ran track in the spring and summer.
Although, football is his first love, you would never know that by comments from his coaches in the other sports. He gave his best no matter what sport he was playing. His coaches had nothing but praise for his dedication to excellence, commitment to being the best team player, and his relentless competitive spirit and desire to win; while simultaneously being one of the most coachable and humble young men they have been around.
“ The best combination of student, athlete and person that you could ever ask for,” Hawks Boys Basketball Coach Greg Brown said.“ He is this big, strong, athletic, talented young man,” Volcano Vista Track Coach Shane Cleveland said,“ Who also is the most down to earth, kind, sweet, lovable young man.” Remember these are comments from coaches of the other sports Cormier participated in, where you would think his efforts would not be as committed.
As stated earlier Cormier made a difference for the teams he played on. His report card reads as follows, Cormier was named to the NMPreps. com 6A All-State Team tallying 59 receptions for just shy of 900 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He was a first-team All-State selection as a forward for the Volcano Vista’ s State Championship basketball team. In fact, anyone who witnessed the championship
game would have to admit that there is no way Volcano Vista could have won the championship without Cormier.
In track, Cormier also leaves as a state champion. He ran on Volcano Vista’ s 4x100-meter championship relay team and also excelled as a sprinter, a long jumper and triple jumper.
Clearly one can see that Cormier is one of the state’ s most gifted tri-sport athlete. He was named by the Albuquerque Journal as its 2016-17 boys Metro Athlete of the Year.
Cormier is an only child, who was raised by his single parent mother, Angie. He shares,“ I have never felt a lack for anything. She has always supported me in everything that I do. I have always been her priority, and that makes her my most precious gift... And as far as my participation in sports goes, she was always encouraging, no matter whether I am up or down. The only thing she would be on me about is maintaining my grades.”
Cormier chose the location for his advanced education to be at the Air Force Academy. He chose the Air Force over UNLV, Army, New Mexico State, and University of New Mexico.“ The reason I chose Air Force is I fell in love with the campus. It felt like a second-home and it’ s an opportunity for me to do something bigger than me. I’ m serving my country and I can do something to help others. I also felt a genuine appreciation in the contact we received from the Air Force coaches. They appeared to care more about me as a person than any of
