After five decades of serving the University, Africana Studies is the last ethnic studies unit lingering in program status. A department of Africana Studies adds academic legitimacy to the university and creates opportunities for students from across the state, throughout the country and all over the world to pursue a graduate degree in the discipline. A department of Africana Studies at the University of New Mexico increases enrollment, raises the institutions educational and intellectual profile, and positively addresses long-standing concerns about Black campus climate.
