LITERACY LUNCHEON CELEBRATES BETH GORRIE eth Gorrie, founder and director of Staten Island OutLOUD, was honored at the Society’s 2008 Literacy Leadership Luncheon on February 27, for her dedication to promoting this unique community dialogue and performance project. With its emphasis on great works of world literature, OutLOUD has strengthened ties between Staten Island’s diverse communities. Since its founding in September 2001, OutLOUD has presented 200 free performances in 20 languages in Staten Island’s nature preserves, bookshops, museums, galleries, public housing projects, in libraries, parks, cafes, community centers, churches, temples, mosques and synagogues, and the open grassy yards of Historic Richmond Town. “Staten Island OutLOUD is grateful to the staff, to the board, and to the members of the Staten Island Historical Society for hosting many of our events at Historic Richmond Town.” Said Mrs. Gorrie. “As OutLOUD celebrates our local history, it’s been a thrill to develop spokenword programs from SIHS archives. And as OutLOUD continues to grow, we look forward to working with SIHS, and to continuing exploration of our community’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.” The event was chaired by Caroline M.
