LAWYERS SUPPORTING BAR FOUNDATION
WITH QUILT PROJECT FUNDRAISER
For the fourth year lawyers and judges from across the state have
pooled their artistic talents to create a quilt for the North
Dakota Bar Foundation Silent Auction. This year’s piece
brought together the work of Supreme Court Justice
Carol Kapsner and attorney, Sherry Mills Moore,
Bismarck, Judge Robin Schmidt, Watford City,
Administrative Law Judge Susan Bailey, West
Fargo, and co-chairs, Magistrate Judge Alice
Senechal and attorney, Lolita Romanick,
both of Grand Forks. The custom
machine quilting was procured
from Melissa DelaBarre, of Sew
Addicted Quilting, Bismarck.
This year’s quilt is a
traditional “sampler” quilt
measuring 101 inches square,
or a generous king-size. The
sampler block patterns were selected
by each of the respective creative
quilters, providing a “sampling” of different
patterned blocks. Once
each participant completed their five chosen blocks, they were
sent to Grand Forks. The two co-chairs arranged them in
a setting known as an Irish Chain. In this design, the
sampler blocks are alternated with “nine patch” blocks
creating a diagonal framework of cream colored
strips, linked by deep burgundy and brown “four
patch” blocks.
The quilt backing echoes the Irish
Chain pattern in a tan and
dark brown color scheme; it
sports a stunning machine
embroidered “Lady of
Justice” on the label
which also identifies
the attorneys and
judges who stitched this
quilt. It has a “sleeve” should
the lucky recipient wish to hang
the quilt for display. This year the
quilt also will be accompanied by two
coordinating king-sized pillow shams
and one decorator pillow.
This is the second year that the quilt is being
handled as a raffle as part of the Silent Auction. It is
traveling around the state to show its glory and provide
a “ticket purchasing” opportunity for attorneys and the
general public in those additional locations. In Grand Forks,
it made appearances at the Randy H. Lee Inns of Court, Helen
Hamilton Days, and the North Star Quilters Guild. It will be
shown in Fargo at the Cass County Bar meeting. In Bismarck,
plans are that it will be displayed at various locations. Then it will
make its way back to the east in time to shine at the Silent Auction
on June 12 at the Fargo Radisson.
Raffle tickets are available from any of the six individuals listed
above, any SBAND director or staff, or any Bar Foundation director.
If you have not had an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for this
quilt ensemble prior to that event, you still will be able to purchase
them at the Silent Auction itself.
The North Dakota Bar Foundation Silent Auction raises funds
which are used to further the Foundations’s mission to recognize
and support programs that improve the level of legal education
and lawyer standards, to protect and preserve North Dakota legal
history, and to encourage public service by lawyers and those
involved with the justice system. Past projects which have been
supported by Foundation awards can be found on the SBAND
website.
