The classroom that my students and I have been able to create has been possible due to the same temporary nature of the Fulbright position that I once critiqued. I have freedom that none of the other teachers in the department have with their classes and that I doubt I will ever have as a teacher again, even after I return to the U.S. My hope is that my students, the majority of whom have expressed an interest in being, or are already, seasoned teachers, will fight to create similar spaces of exploration in their own lives or for the next generation of students. For this, I wake up each morning miserably hot, exasperated by the fact that my student’s enthusiasm has made maximum word lengths and reasonable grading times impossible to enforce, and, most importantly, absolutely unable to believe my luck.
