SPORTSMEN ’ S ALLIANCE RESEARCH CAN EDUCATE YOUR FRIENDS , THE MEDIA AND THE OUTDOORS INDUSTRY .
Part of the Sportsmen ’ s Alliance mission is research that the industry can use to better understand , recruit , retain , educate and provide for hunters , anglers , trappers , boaters and shooters . Our “ 2020 Economic Impacts of Hunting and Target Shooting Report ” is a perfect example of quantifying vast amounts of data into easy-tounderstand presentations that can be used to educate local , state and federal officials , or even just your friends .
In 2024 , we ’ re conducting two research projects , one that will help shooting ranges provide the most desirable opportunities , and another that will quantify the costs and impacts of losing hunting and trapping .
Identifying Shooting Range Opportunities As state agencies construct and improve shooting ranges , many different shooting activities can be offered . Public ranges generally consist of the typical 25-yard rimfire and 100-yard centerfire ranges , along with some form of shotgun and / or handgun sports . But just as preferences for restaurants , movies and music varies , different people are attracted to different types of shooting opportunities .
Our research project will help ensure that states and other range builders construct facilities that best serve the public , both current and potential new shooters . The results will help guide range construction by explaining the types of shooting opportunities that will best attract avid and occasional shooters , as well as encourage people interested in shooting to try it . Through a better understanding of the types of shooting , on-site services , appearance , design of greatest appeal and location of ranges to current and would-be shooters , participation can be maximized , as well as public support for the shooting sports and the conservation funds generated by excise taxes on ammunition and firearms .
Costs of Losing Hunting and Trapping In 2005 , a vital report was produced that detailed the human costs and impacts of losing hunting and trapping as wildlife management tool — such as $ 3.8 billion spent on automobile repairs after collisions with deer ( and an additional 50,000 human injuries ), a potential $ 8.3 billion loss to the timber industry due to wildlife damages and $ 1.45 billion in healthcare and disease control of just rabies .
Over the next year we ’ ll update those figures to current economic numbers and take a look at some of the costs and areas of the country where we ’ re seeing losses of hunting and trapping opportunities due to animal extremism . The results of the report will be shared with wildlife-management professionals at state agencies and the media , and will be available on the Sportsmen ’ s Alliance website . With increased understanding of the hard costs to citizens , states and businesses , we can all better advocate for scientific wildlife management at all levels of government and when writing op-eds in local papers .
