angler or trapper . Those running for office will often “ go hunting ” just prior to Election Day to offer proof of their commitment , but as we ’ ve learned way too often , this turns out to be nothing more than political eyewash and a silly photo opportunity that has no substance whatsoever .
Politicians will also join hunting and conservation organizations to illustrate their bona fides as “ one of us .” The unfortunate reality is that this could be meaningful or just another political device to lull voters into believing something that is not true . And because nobody is holding the official truly accountable for the votes they take , this ruse may go on for years and years .
This lack of accountability is true even in those cases where hunting organizations have taken a clear “ yes ” or “ no ” position on a particular bill . When was the last time you were notified , in any way , that an elected official voted against you and the group you are a member of ? Again , this is the basic paradigm of many hunting and conservation organizations . “ Sportsman ” legislators vote the wrong way , but nobody calls them on it .
What we are left with is zero fear of consequence when an official acts against those who hunt , fish or trap . That has to end , and the fix starts with our new online voter education system .
Although all the details have not been worked out as of press time , our concept is to highlight the bills that were acted upon in a given state and publish the votes of all those who occupy roles such as state house or state senate member . We believe this information is so completely lacking at the state level that this is where we begin . Often it is state legislators , after all , who do the most good , or the most damage , to our outdoor traditions , so it makes sense to start with state activities and then grow the program to include everyone at all levels in future elections .
It goes without saying that this is a major investment and major undertaking . But we are proud to be the tip of the spear on this initiative and get more accountability to and for sportsmen all across our great nation .
As with our Office of Litigation Counsel , our new voter education program will move us all in the right direction of protecting and promoting the American sportsman well into the future . We look forward to turning this new page and helping American hunters , trappers and anglers make the best possible decisions come Election Day .
