HUNTING WEEKENDS

EASTERN STATES CONTINUE TO SLOWLY MODERNIZE THEIR SUNDAY HUNTING LAWS .

ong overdue , Sunday hunting prohibitions continue to fall after hundreds of years . The handful of Eastern states with the blue laws still on the books dwindles every session as legislators and the nonhunting public recognize how outdated they are in today ’ s world .
With weekends the only time most hunters have to get afield , Sunday hunting bans drastically cut the ability of citizens to exercise their privilege to hunt , which they pay for when purchasing licenses and tags . The antiquated laws are rightfully coming down .
Maryland
The Old Line State has two pieces of legislation attempting to modernize its Sunday hunting . House Bill 1087 authorizes the Department of Natural Resources to allow a person to hunt game birds and mammals on each Sunday of those seasons . The county-specific approach by the bill is pending a floor vote by the House of Representatives .
House Bill 1119 , which was still in committee at press time , establishes a year-round open season for the hunting of furbearing mammals and removes certain limitations on the hunting of
furbearing mammals on Sundays in Dorchester County .
Connecticut and Massachusetts
Connecticut ’ s Senate Bill 1149 removes the prohibition of hunting on Sunday on public and private land once and for all . Connecticut currently has limited hunting on Sundays , and there ’ s no reason not to extend the opportunity to more hunters in the state .
Massachusetts has four bills stuck in House committees that incrementally open Sunday hunting by species or method .
