RESEARCH LED BY THE SPORTSMEN ’ S ALLIANCE ASSISTS STATE AGENCIES AND OTHER EDUCATORS IN TRAINING NEW AND EXPERIENCED OUTDOORSMEN .

Advocacy is just one aspect of the Sportsmen ’ s Alliance mission . Through our foundation , we also engage in research and education . That education takes place not just in high-school classrooms with our Conservation Science curriculum , but we also strive to educate legislators and other decision-makers , such as with our state economic impact research , as well as the public .

Our latest research project compared the effectiveness of inperson versus virtual events when it comes to the recruitment , retention and reactivation of sportsmen . Armed with better insight , state agencies and other stakeholders can make better decisions about when and where to offer classes and outreach .
2 . Virtual events might be generating greater behavioral changes in the field . R3 events have little effect on people ’ s likelihood of purchasing a license , regardless of format . Less than 10 % of virtual and in-person event attendees reported buying additional licenses and permits because of attending an event . However , about two-thirds report having greater skills and confidence due to either approach , meaning education events likely assist states ’ retention goals , with some respondents reporting higher rates of active engagement afield following the event .
RESULTS : VIRTUAL VS . IN-PERSON R3 EVENTS
1 . People like both virtual and in-person events . Participants report high levels of satisfaction with both inperson and virtual events . Reports of being “ extremely satisfied ” were higher among in-person event participants . However , given the satisfaction levels reported for virtual events and the greater number of participants in online vs in-person programs reported by states , the expanded ‘ reach ’ of virtual events may translate to greater gross benefits .
3 . Virtual events reach similar audiences as in-person events . Demographics do not drive event choices , but experienced recreationists are more likely to select the most convenient training option , which is often a virtual event . On the other hand , new recreationists are more likely to select in-person events and may need in-person experiences to feel comfortable when trying a new activity . Each type of program serves unique purposes , with in-person events being best for new recruits .
