Time is money , the saying goes . However , time isn ’ t just valuable from a financial aspect of toiling away at a career in exchange for a payday , but from the perspective that there ’ s a finite amount for each of us . When your mortal deadline is reached , time ’ s up — no extensions , no refunds .

As I get older and that ( hopefully ) distant end date draws closer while the start fades further into the past , quality time and enjoyment become paramount to more frivolous pursuits . Capturing moments with my son , Tucker , and others is what matters , and hunting provides a gateway to valuable time together , laughter , learning lessons and the bonding that only the fluctuating variables of nature and the pursuit of wild game can throw at you .
Last season , Tuck killed a cow elk and a handful of pheasants while coming up empty , despite a close call or two , during deer season . This year , he ’ s had an exciting opening-weekend turkey hunt , making a tight shot on a fired-up tom that was bugging out ; spotted and stalked deer during muzzleloader season ; as well as learned an important lesson about choices , when during his first-ever archery season the big bull elk we watched since summer was captured on the game camera visiting his stand — while Tuck was at a high-school football game .
Likewise , I took a fraternity brother ’ s son , Cam , out that same opening weekend of turkey season . Cam took the initiative to pass hunter ’ s education without any guidance or assurance of getting out . Opening morning , he had college-entrance-related
