East and West Coast states alike have embraced gun-control tactics that aim to take a chunk out of the pocketbooks of the law-abiding while doing nothing to stop gang violence , the drug trade or to force prosecutors to actually punish those convicted of crimes .
CALIFORNIA The Golden State has never met gun control that it didn ’ t like , and in recent years has passed laws that severely hamper not just those legally defending themselves , but especially hunters . The state requires eligibility checks to purchase ammunition , and bringing ammo into California from other states is illegal . Proving that gun-control activists are never satisfied , Senate Bill 135 , which allows the attorney general to increase fees to run those background checks , passed earlier this year .
Awaiting Gov . Newsom ’ s signature were Assembly Bill 28 and 1587 . AB 28 imposes an additional 11 percent tax on the sale of any firearm , firearm precursor part or ammunition , which will finance the “ Gun Violence Prevention , Healing , and Recovery Fund .” Meanwhile , AB 1587 requires stores that process a card transaction to track the purchases of firearms and ammunition with a new merchant category code .
MASSACHUSETTS Apparently , Massachusetts wants to follow in the steps of California , but doesn ’ t want to be outdone . H . 2771 imposes a 36 percent excise tax on firearms and ammunition to fund the newly established “ Public Health and Safety Fund .” As the legislative session ramps up again , we ’ re also watching for the reintroduction of HD . 4420 , an egregious gun-control bill that would end youth hunting and require registration of all firearms .
