Hunting and fishing not only teach you how strong you are mentally and physically , but they can also change you both ways , making you stronger and healthier .
When I came back , I accepted a job transfer to Denver with the pharmaceutical company that I had been with for more than four years . About six months after moving , I realized I could no longer be in an office looking at everything from the inside out . I went home , typed up an email and sent it to about 15 different fishing outfitters . It only took one company and one interview to say yes . A month later , I had quit my job and moved from the suburbs of Denver to the mountains , and I ’ ve been here for a little over four years now .
Growing up in Texas , all the hunting I had done was in a deer blind over a corn feeder , which was kind of the standard way to hunt whitetails in that state . When I got to Colorado , I was really eager to learn about public lands and how to access them . I learned to apply for the draws and everything it took to hunt here . It took me a couple of years to get all of that pinned down , going out hunting with friends and learning . Three years ago , I finally got my first tag in my pocket , and I went elk hunting . Going elk hunting for five days by yourself will teach you some lessons ! It teaches you how strong you are mentally , as well as physically , and it ’ s become something I look forward to every year .
Hunting and fishing not only teach you how strong you are mentally and physically , but they can also change you both ways , making you stronger and healthier . I started out as a fly-fishing guide , and I was wading a lot . People underestimate how much strength that takes and how much muscle that builds . When I moved to Colorado , I weighed 286 pounds . Now I ’ m down to about 150 pounds . All of that weight was lost either in the field or in the river wading . My first season guiding ice-fishing , I lost 60 pounds because of how physically intensive it was dragging a sled up to 3 miles a day . It was enough for me to drop two pant sizes . It ’ s still a shocker for me when I look in the mirror .
Hunting and fishing have changed my entire life for the better ! I can ’ t imagine living any other way .
