California has made it unlawful to promote the use of firearms in any activity , including hunting and target shooting , that youth may find appealing . The Sportsmen ’ s Alliance has filed suit against this misguided and unconstitutional law .
within its borders and the rights of Native communities . The two groups were granted intervenor status , completed oral argument in early August and now await a decision .
WILDLIFE REFUGES
COURT : Federal
WHAT ’ S AT STAKE : Federal public lands , traditional ammunition and fishing tackle use
PARTNERS : Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation , Safari Club International , National Rifle Association
SUMMARY : Dan Ashe , then director of FWS under President Obama , unilaterally ended the use of lead ammunition on the National Wildlife Refuge System on Obama ’ s last day in office in January 2017 . Upon taking office , the Trump administration quickly revoked the order and followed this move by expanding hunting and fishing opportunities on 2.2 million acres of the system during his first year in office . The Center for Biological Diversity ( CBD ), always on the lookout for a sue-and-settle opportunity , challenged the Trump expansion claiming it violated the ESA because , among other things , lead ammunition and fishing tackle were detrimental to wildlife and the environment .
CURRENT STANDING : The Sportsmen ’ s Alliance first sounded the alarm about a potential settlement by FWS and the need to hold the Biden administration accountable to
America ’ s hunters and anglers . Our opposition to a settlement was supported by more than 40 conservation organizations , 33 U . S . representatives and 27 U . S . senators . Despite that backlash , Deb Haaland , the Secretary of Interior , continued to conduct backroom negotiations with the CBD , removed a Trump-era website detailing government settlements and proposed a rule to end the use of lead ammunition and fishing equipment on all future refuge expansions . The Sportsmen ’ s Alliance is monitoring the situation and will take all appropriate action to defend our public lands .
Most notably , the FWS and CBD are currently fighting intervention by the Sportsmen ’ s Alliance and its partners in the case , contending there is no reason to grant intervention when the hunting expansion challenged in the litigation will remain in place under their tentative settlement . We will continue to fight for intervention in this and all cases because the sue-and-settle tactics deployed by animalextremist organizations to force their views on the rest of America must be halted .
