BECOME INVOLVED WITH LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEES If you ’ re looking to take your impact one step further and make connections in your state beyond your district , use your state ’ s legislative website to identify the legislative committee that handles hunting-related bills . Typically , such bills will be grouped together with other issues , such as the environment , natural resources , wildlife or agriculture . Depending on the nature of the bill and if there are firearm-safety aspects , it may be sent to a committee for public safety or sometimes a judiciary committee . Each state is slightly different , so you might start by searching for hunting bills from last session and then find the committees to which those bills were sent .
The great thing about committees is they will often have staffers you can get to know and become a resource for . And , just as the research you conducted on your own legislators , building a relationship with the committee chairperson is very important . Committee chairs have a lot of power in the process over what bills are heard and when . In fact , after building a relationship with your own legislators , you can often ask for an introduction to the committee chairs who handle hunting- and conservation-related issues . The key is to offer yourself as a resource they can rely upon for objective and helpful information about hunting , fishing , trapping , conservation and related issues , as well as contacts and connections in our community more broadly .
