HERO : GLENN YOUNGKIN
Virginia Governor
It ’ s rare that a politician today takes a strong prohunting stance on a topic controversial among urban voting blocs , and then actually delivers on those commitments . However , that ’ s exactly what Gov . Youngkin did , and thanks to his fortitude , Old Dominion hunters are hunting public lands on Sundays this season — something they haven ’ t done for hundreds of years . Access to opportunities has long been cited as the No . 1 reason that hunters simply stop hunting , and Sunday hunting bans play a huge part in limiting access . The Sportsmen ’ s Alliance has fought to reduce and remove Sunday hunting bans for many years and will continue to fight in the handful of states where they remain .

WHO WE LIKE AND WHO WE FIGHT IN THE BATTLE FOR HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES .

VILLAIN : PHIL MURPHY
New Jersey Governor
Two years ago , the Sportsmen ’ s Alliance Foundation put a bear expert on the stand to testify to the ramifications of Gov . Murphy ending bear hunting on state-owned lands in New Jersey . The expert made no bones by predicting that after two years with a ban in place , expanding populations would lead to an increase in negative human-bear encounters . Indeed , from January to August 2022 , the Garden State has seen a 175 percent increase in damage and nuisance complaints as compared to the same time last year . Category I encounters , the most dangerous , which include home and vehicle entries , aggressive bears and attacks on humans , increased 230 percent . Gov . Murphy has recently said they were “ watching closely ” and “ trying to learn ” how to be better and more aggressive ( but not too aggressive , apparently ) at regulating the problem . His solution so far has been to double down on non-lethal means by allocating an additional $ 3 million in 2022-23 to try to control the burgeoning population .
