One of the great things about farming is that anyone can lend a hand and feel useful. Whatever the activity – burning a field, moving a flock of sheep, ploughing a paddock, picking up rocks, chewing the fat, making smoko – there is always an essential job that can be accomplished by any man, woman or child who shows willing on the day. I owe many thanks to Paul Thompson, Gary Martin, Anne Walton, Peter Dameon, Emma Foulkes-Taylor, Heath Nixon, Vic Forrester, Colin McCartney and sons, Craig and Lewis Burnett, Tracy Waugh, Libby Rowland, Rox Grant, Tina Mulks, Claire Heelan, Christiane and Tomas, Maree Lewis, and all those people who answered my questions about farming, growing and agriculture, including Paul Mitchell, Greg Brennan, Glen Macklin, Gary McCaugh, Christine Zaicou-Kunesch, Robyn Neeson and everyone else. Special thanks to Geoff Sherlock, Bill Kerr and the O’Brees. 48
