Debbie Adler is the owner of the nationally renown, vegan, gluten-free bakery Sweet Debbie’s Organic Cupcakes located in Los Angeles. It is the first bakery in the United States to make allergyfree/gluten-free baked goods that contain certified organic ingredients that are sweetened only with stevia and coconut nectar. In addition to owning her bakery, Debbie is also the author of the critically acclaimed cookbook, Sweet Debbie’s Organic Treats: Allergy-free & Vegan Recipes from the Famous Los Angeles Bakery. Please tell us more about your family. I have a six year old son named Shahn, and he has severe and life threatening food allergies. I also have a husband who is a medical professional. Thinking about your journey raising a child with severe food allergies, can you elaborate on this comment: “I wished I knew then, what I know now”? All the drama with the food allergies happened with my son at a very young age, before he was 2, and there is really nothing else we could have known. The only thing that maybe we could have done differently was to have an epi pen in the house even before he was diagnosed. But I don’t know if that would be a reasonable expectation. Can you share with us your child’s diagnosis? My son is allergic to dairy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds, flax seeds and shellfish.
