AnnCatherine will not graduate with a diploma because she will
not pass the Indiana ISTEP tests. She will receive a certificate of

What does a parent have to be aware of when they are
transitioning their child into high school so they can
stay on that diploma track?
Consider moving to another state and do your research first. With developmental disabilities and their impact on academics it may not currently be possible to obtain a diploma. As difficult as this is, it is also fair
in my opinion that states have requirements for obtaining a diploma, if
it not, those diplomas would not mean anything. Honestly, as a special
needs Momma…I’d love for AnnCatherine to have a diploma…but as
a Mom of typically developing kiddos as well…what they earned in
high school should have a different significance. Her course work is
not at the academic level of a typical high school student’s course work
and what she earns should reflect that. I think parents need to think
through their child’s limitations and be honest and accepting about
what they are able to do and what is not possible. Fortunately,
many universities have programs for people with intellectual disabilities today, so it is completely possible for our special needs
kiddos to proceed to higher education. We fully anticipate AnnCatherine will go on to college.
What do you wish long term for your daughter?
I hope that AnnCatherine will have a life that she is passionate
about and that she is excited to get up every day and do what she is
doing. I hope she lives independently and feels valued and loved.
I also hope that she is a contributing member of society, that she
uses her gifts and talents to serve and bless others.§
