Summer 2020
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our
Summer programme.
It’s a cold and wet late February
morning, still in the midst of the
remnants of winter in Thurles,
when we’re completing the
brochure for Summer 2020 here
at The Source. We set up our
programme sometimes up to 18
months in advance, so it’s often
hard to imagine the
circumstances or the even the
season some events may
eventually take place in. Thoughts
of sun and holidays are far off in
the distance. But we must always
look ahead.
This programme includes our new
set of summer camps for young
people which we have revamped
over the past two years. We’ve
looked to reframe the camps
within the broader Arts and not
just have them as a place where
your kids go for a week. The
intention is that they have a fuller
experience of an artform over a
week. We’re bringing in a more
exciting music camp (called
Musikkamp, as it happens) for
teenagers which will focus on
electronic and digital creation of
sounds. The camp should
additionally help those who
normally work with the basic
guitar, drums and bass, to expand
their sound. Our Summer Youth
Project is focussed on the work of
an artist – in this case Salvador
Dali – and their work. The project
is called ‘The Persistence of
Memory’ and we are looking

forward to seeing what the young
people do using Dali’s surrealism
as the basis for both a visual art
and performance piece. And we
also have a very specific camp for
young writers. We call this a
‘hothouse’ camp as we aim to
give those interested in writing a
chance to take part in an intensive
two days of workshops. So if you
know a young person aged
between 15 and 17 who is
interested in writing – they may
be working on a regular blog, or is
writing at home or school to a
high standard (whether fiction,
non-fiction or poetry) - let us
know by email.
Still looking ahead, we’re working
on a new strategy for the Centre
that will reach from 2020 to 2023
and we are looking for your input.
If you’ve been a regular or casual
visitor to The Source, you
probably know what we’ve been
up to in the past number of years.
Moving forward, we are creating a
strategy to give some clarity in
identifying where we need to
direct our energies into the future.
We’ll be having some public
consultation around this, but you
are also welcome to email me at
the address below in respect of
any thoughts you might have.
We look forward
to seeing you at
The Source.
