Ottumwa & Centerville
Indian Hills Community College— with campuses in Ottumwa and Centerville— is a public, two-year junior college founded in 1966 that serves students from 19 high schools across a 10-county region. The college offers a four-day academic week, an average class size of 14, and more than 100 degrees, diplomas and certificates spanning fields from skilled trades to nursing and liberal arts. As of fall 2025, IHCC reported an enrollment of 3,198 students.
Indian Hills has a strong athletic tradition and is among the most decorated colleges in the National Junior College Athletic Association, with 14 national championships across five team sports, including three consecutive women’ s wrestling national titles.
One of the most significant developments in the college’ s history occurred in 2021, when voters approved a $ 28 million bond referendum to upgrade facilities across all campuses. Projects included construction of the Irma W. Winslow Education Center in Centerville, the addition of virtual classrooms in regional high schools to support concurrent enrollment, upgrades to the fine arts building and a new welcome center on the main campus in Ottumwa, and a new criminal justice training facility on the north campus near the Ottumwa Regional Airport.
The final phase of the bond project is currently underway with construction of a student wellness center on the main campus in Ottumwa.
