LOCATED AN EASY HOUR ’ S DRIVE southeast of Des Moines , Mahaska County represents a confluence of Iowa ’ s best qualities . A drive down one of the county ’ s roads showcases Iowa ’ s farming and pioneer heritage , with miles of corn and soybean fields in every direction . Contrasting with the area ’ s deeply rural and agrarian roots , Oskaloosa , the county seat , is a hub for fine arts and small town charm .
Oskaloosa saw a surge of dining and entertainment options open in 2024 .
In June , Bridget ’ s Public House — an Irish bar that also serves food — opened downtown . In July , the P . O . Box sports bar opened in the basement of the old post office and school administration building at the corner of North Market Street and A Avenue , capping a yearslong renovation of the building that had sat vacant for decades .
The P . O . Box was the first of two restaurants that inhabit the space . The second restaurant , American Table , which occupies the first and second floors of the building , opened in November . American Table offers a more upscale menu for a casual fine dining experience .
Full Bloom Brewhouse , which features craft beer brewed on-site and a menu of appetizers and hotdogs opened in October at 1718 Pella Ave . Owner-operator John McMains had been the head brewer at NoCoast Beer Co . in Oskaloosa .
The long-awaited Trio Entertainment Venue , off of Highway 92 West behind the Fairfield Inn hotel , also opened in November . The $ 17 million facility includes a three-screen movie theater , four pickleball courts , three golf simulators , two indoor tennis courts and a sports bar and grill-style restaurant that serves burgers , wraps and sandwiches .
