Mission Statement : The Ottumwa Public Library serves the residents of Ottumwa and Wapello county by providing resources to satisfy curiosity and stimulate the imagination of citizens ; offering a safe , comfortable place for the individual to enjoy and for the community to gather ; and endeavoring to inform patrons about their community and the resources it offers .

Library Services :
Book Clubs : OPL hosts three book clubs which meet at the library each month : Call the library ( 641 ) 682-7563 to learn the latest book being read and to confirm that month ’ s meeting time .
• Readers Ink ( reads primarily fiction ) 2nd Wednesday at 6 p . m .
• Nonfiction Book Club 4th Thursday at 5:30 p . m .
• Speculative Literature Book Club 3rd Tuesday at 5:30 pm
Copies & Copying : The library has a copy machine available to the general public on the first floor of the library . Copies of letter sized and legal sized pages are $. 15 per single-sided page .
Fax Services : The library offers faxing services to the general public . The public can
both send and receive faxes at the library . There is a fee for faxing to long-distance numbers and to receive faxes . It is free to fax to local and toll-free numbers .
Genealogy Records Retrieval : We are happy to help patrons in their search for genealogical information . Patrons who are unable to come to the library in person may request that library staff retrieve an article or obituary for them . The library has newspapers from Ottumwa on microfilm from 1871 to the present date ( there are some gaps in our collection prior to 1900 ). Individuals who would like to request a look-up can contact staff at the library . Please provide as much information about the search as you can . Donations for this service are welcomed .
Meeting Room : Located on the first floor of the library , the library ’ s meeting room is available to use for events that are free and open to the public . The meeting room can accommodate a maximum of 35 people ( depending upon seating arrangements required ). Advanced booking is required . Please call the library at 641-682-7563 for further questions and to reserve the room .
Microfilm Readers : We currently offer three microfilm readers to the public . While the library primarily uses microfilm , both machines are also capable of reading microfiche cards up to 105 mm x 190 mm . Both readers have printers attached to them to allow for the printing of microfilm materials . Each printer
is capable of printing in either letter ( 8.5 in . x 11 in .) or legal ( 8.5 in x 14 in .) size . The charge for printing microfilm materials is $. 50 per exposure .
Story Times : Currently , we are offering one storytime each week on Friday mornings at 9 a . m . They are held in the library for stories , songs and a craft . Because young children are unable to be vaccinated masks and social distancing are still recommended . For current story times and other children ’ s programming , please contact the children ’ s department at 641-682-7563 ext . 208 .
Public Use Computers : The library has computers available for use by the public . Access to public computers is managed by reservation software on a first come first serve basis . Patrons should bring their library card to gain access to an available computer . Out-of-town guests may request a guest pass in order to use a computer .
The Reminisce Society : The Reminisce Society meets once a month ( September through May ), on the fourth Tuesday at 10 a . m . in the library ’ s meeting room . The program series features speakers and workshops focusing on Ottumwa and area history and family genealogy , with plenty of opportunities for participants to share reminiscences about the “ good old days .”
Wireless Internet : The library is your toll-free on-ramp to the information superhighway .
We offer wireless internet connectivity free of charge to the public . The wireless connection is available from 6 a . m . to 9 p . m . The SSID of the connection is “ Library .” Unfortunately , the library does not have wireless connection equipment available to loan . Users must bring their own equipment .
