WATERLOO, IA - Something magical happens when several great events
take place at the same time — it’s like catching lightning in a bottle.
In Waterloo, our ‘lightning in a bottle’ is the first-ever East End Weekend,
featuring the KBBG Parade, March Against the Darkness Drill Team
Competition, the North End Arts & Music Fest, and Heal The Family’s Take
Back Our Community event. The weekend offers events and activities that
are sure to appeal to anyone looking for something to do. Then the Saturday,
August 17th lineup is almost an embarrassment of riches — and most of the
events are free.
The East End Weekend begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 16 with the
North End Arts & Music Fest’s Gospel Fest at East High Auditorium. Hosted
by John Tolbert, the event will feature a praise dance team from Ohio, Kenesha
Davis, and many more outstanding local gospel artists. This celebration is free
and open to the public.
Kicking off Saturday’s festivities is the KBBG Parade, a community event
that has become a beloved tradition over the years. Parade Chair Purvis
Williams, who marks his 3rd year of working with the parade, reveals an exciting
lineup of entries that continues to grow. “Off the top of my head, I believe we
are at 70 [entries]”, Williams says. “We have some AMAZING TEAMS coming
to participate in the parade as well as the Drill Team Competition at East High
School later that night.” This year’s parade proudly presents four parade
