Fatimata’ s Story
Keeping the Water Flowing
When The Sonder Project drills a well, the work does not end when clean water first flows. A well must be cared for, maintained, and repaired when parts wear down. Without local support, even the best water system can stop serving the families who depend on it. Because of this, The Sonder Project trains community-based well mechanics like Fatimata.
Fatimata is a mother of two who supports her family through farming and raising livestock. But farming has become increasingly unpredictable. Mechanic training gave her something new: a practical skill, a source of income, and a way to serve communities around her.
Through the training, Fatimata learned how to dismantle, clean, troubleshoot, and reassemble hand pumps. She received tools, certification, and the confidence to respond when a community calls for help.
That confidence was tested when Fatimata attended a wedding in a nearby community. Guests were struggling to access water, even though a well stood close by. The pump had been broken for some time. When Fatimata offered to repair it, some doubted her. Some even laughed.
She went home, gathered her tools, and returned. In front of the same onlookers, Fatimata took the pump apart, found the problem, and fixed the well. Clean water began flowing again.
