In communities with limited access ( or no access ) to clean water , we can not overstate the impact of drilling deep-well boreholes and creating closed water pump systems . Because of cultural norms , women collect the water for the family , which means waking before the sun rises and waiting hours to collect unfiltered water from shallow wells . But when mom doesn ’ t have to base her schedule around fetching unfiltered water — the whole family wins ! The family won ’ t have to suffer from waterborne diseases , and mom doesn ’ t have to sacrifice hours of her precious time waiting at shallow wells . Across 15 different partner communities , we ’ ve surveyed over 450 women who report an average of one hour and 35 minutes saved collecting water every day , and 92 % of respondents reported improved health .
