THE SONDER PROJECT | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

COVID-19 RESPONSE IMPACT STORY

In addition to developing Coronavirus

protocols to protect our staff and communities from contracting Covid-19 , our established partnerships have put us in a unique position to inform and educate community members about the Coronavirus Pandemic . These partnerships have allowed us to show community members how to protect themselves . The training program we developed focuses on how Covid-19 is transmitted and the importance of handwashing and mask-wearing for prevention . We ’ ve since been able to directly train 250 community members across Burkina Faso and Malawi . We have also inspired the construction of more than 86 hands-free Tippy Tap Handwashing stations !
Athia Matenje , a community member in Malawi , became one of our most enthusiastic teachers after participating in a Sonder Project Covid-19 workshop . Equipped with handouts in the local language provided by The Sonder Project , Athia now spreads the word throughout the community . “ I used to be on the forefront of politicizing Covid-19 ,” she says , “ but now I am at the forefront of disseminating factual information about the virus .”
Meanwhile , Jessy Banda has been using her newfound knowledge to encourage prevention techniques . Since the Sonder Project workshop , the mother of seven has trained at least 8 other households to construct handwashing stations in their compounds . She has also made masks for her entire family and has served as a great model for the rest of the community .
As long as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a threat , we will continue to promote understanding and prevention in all of our partner communities .
