e face many situations in which we simply have to overcome them. Ridding one’s self
of that comfort zone can be extremely beneficial to one’s real world experience. How can
someone ever improve, if he/she never attempts? Failure is something that can scare even the
most confident people, but learning ways to help step out of that personal bubble can lead us to
adapt to an ever-changing world and gain some much-needed skills.
To start stepping out of that comfort zone, one has to be willing to take baby steps at first.
Don’t dive right into to an uncomfortable situation.
Professor of
Organizational Behavior, Andy Molinsky, explains that winging it is never a good idea:
“When you’re going to step out of your comfort zone in a situation that’s meaningful,
you need to have a good chance for success. Whether it’s speaking up in a meeting or giving a
keynote address at a conference, you want to say
something worthwhile, and not fumble your
words. You can never fully prepare for something you’ve never done before, but you shouldn’t
wing it, either.”
To start stepping out of that
comfort zone, start preparing for whatever you need to work on. Start off small, if you need to
prepare for a speech gather some friends from the
class, or if not make some. friends, and practice speeches together.
