THE ART OF

PAPERCUTTING

T

The art of papercutting dates back to the 6th century. The art form originated in China, but quickly spread across Asia and Europe. Today, it appears as part of many cultures. Contemporary papercutting is associated with stenciling and silhouettes.

In the past year, I discovered papercutting, and have been creating works based on original designs as well as working from stencils. I hope to explore other forms of paper art in the futures, like origami and paper tole.

Here you can see the way a papercut gradually comes to light. Like a sculptor, I simply cut away every- thing that is not the finished piece - in this case, a garden.

This was my first attempt at a more intricate cut, so I am working from a printed vector design.
