The Naiku Shrine is rebuilt every 20 years to reinforce the Shinto belief in the concept of impermanence, and that death and nature’s renewal are part of the lifecycle. The most recent renovation completed in October 2013, with the next rebuilding project scheduled for 2033. The wood from the old shrine is recycled and used to reconstruct the torii (shrine gate) at the shrine’s entrance.
1. Do behave respectfully.
2. Don’t visit if you are sick or have an open wound as these are considered causes of impurity.
3. Do take a ladle provided at the purification fountain in front of the shrine, fill it with fresh water, and rinse with both hands.
4. Do transfer some water into your cupped hand to rinse your mouth and slit the water out beside the fountain.
5. Don't transfer the water directly from the ladle to your mouth or swallow the water
6. Do offer a coin by tossing it into the offering box, bowing twice deeply as a sign of respect. Next, clap your hands twice to summon Inari and bow deeply once more before entering the shrine.
