EVOLUTION
The earliest instance of a “personal computer”
was considered to be the watch, invented during
the 16th century. Referred to as miniaturisation,
the watch allowed people to view the time
without a large structure being present to
encompass a clock.
A program produced by National Geographic
named Nanotechnology devices in the Future
explores why technology has decreased in size
over the years. It allows “more functions in a
smaller space” (Gygax, 2014). The introduction of
silicon allowed the production of digital watches
as the material is a semiconductor and has the
ability to create digital data. This was the first
time a material replaced a machine. As a result,
materials can get smaller whilst maintaining their
properties unlike machines . (Nanotechnology
devices in the Future, 2014)
