In the 1960s Mykonos attracts the likes of Marlon Bran-
do and Jackie O, and their pictures enjoying the island’s
famed hospitality and unique lifestyle circulate around the
globe. Aristotle Onassis, who is then the owner of Olym-
pic Airlines, constructs the first airport, and Konstaninos
Karamanlis, the young and dashing Greek Prime Minister,
chooses Mykonos to relax and unwind in the summer.
Mykonos is all about freedom. Nobody judges anybody
here; and this is the reason that in the 1970s gay couples
start flocking into the island of winds. Elizabeth Taylor, Rita
Hayworth and the so-called sad princess Soraya, also come
here to “feel free” again.
This liberal spirit –and liberating atmosphere– has be-
come Mykonos’ trademark ever since. The once poor island
in the middle of the Aegean, nowadays is the undisputed
queen of glamorous holiday destinations. International hip
publications exalt the virtues and the beauty of the island,
while popular tabloid magazines are filled with endless
gossip of champagne sipping, (often) misbehaving celeb-
rities. Mykonos, going stronger than ever, is no doubt the
“IT” place to be!
