At the first Christmas tree-lighting celebration, 150 people from the town came in anticipation of the train depot being returned to the town as part of a plan to restore a sense of history, place and pride to the downtown area. The Depot Park was beautifully landscaped and since then has become the central hub of many of the town’s community activities including the annual Blooms and Berries festival in early summer. These “new” town celebrations are now becoming tradition, as residents who attended the first summer festivals and tree lighting ceremonies can now look forward to bringing their children. The Lions Club has worked with Our Town Upland, The Upland Historical “It’s not just for the past, it’s not just for the present, but it’s for future generations that come to live in the area as more development happens,” said Marylou Habecker last year. “We need each other. We need a strong community, and they need our strength as well.” Society, Woman’s Life and Taylor University to bring the celebration to us again this year, with Chip and Verna Jaggers as the Honorary Tree Lighters. The Jaggers have been GROCERY AND VARIETY STORE CALL: 765-998-1111 deeply involved in the community of Upland for many years, and have been part of the tree lighting ceremony since its beginning, with Chip Jaggers choosing the tree-lighters each year as the Vice President of the Town Council of Upland. The event has increasingly drawn people from all aspects of town life, including local residents, school children and parents, and Taylor students. This is due to a number of different activities representing groups in the community - last year Eugene and MaryLou Habecker lit the tree honoring their final year in service at Taylor University as President and First Lady. This year, once again, there will be ornaments decorating the tree from local elementary school students which formed part of a competition organised by the local Lions Club with Eastbrook Schools. The new President and Olde Tyme CHRISTMAS First Lady, Lowell and Sherry Haines, will be introduced, and an exciting new memorial project for the Depot Park will be explained by Charity Bailey, Vice-President of Our Town Upland. The Jungle Cats Band from Taylor University will perform Christmas music, and everyone will have the chance to join in their favorite carols. The $ Bridge Cafe will provide free European Christmas Pastries and Hot Drinks to beat the chilly evening air, and the kids may even bump into Santa… “It’s not just for the past, it’s not just for the present, but it’s for future generations that come to live in the area as more development happens,” said Marylou Habecker last year. “We need each other. We need a strong community, and they need our strength as well.” Old Thyme Christmas begins at 5pm in the Depot Park on Railway Street, Upland on Sunday, December 4th.
